Alvarez wants to leave Atletico, says transfer is 'best thing for everyone'

Julian Alvarez wants out.

Amid swirling rumors about his future, the Argentina forward said Monday he would like to leave Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window.

“I don’t think it’s the right moment to talk, but I also don’t want to hide,” Alvarez told ESPN after the Albiceleste’s 2-0 win over Austria at the World Cup. “I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at (Atletico) who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream.”

Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal are reportedly interested in Alvarez, while Real Madrid publicly stated that their city rivals rebuffed their €150-million bid for the 26-year-old.

Though Alvarez didn’t reveal where he’d like to play next, Barcelona are believed to be his preferred destination, sources told Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens of ESPN.

Barcelona are looking for more firepower up front this summer following the departure of veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, who left as a free agent. Barca have already acquired winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal reportedly worth up to €80 million.

Alvarez has scored 25 La Liga goals in two seasons since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024.
