Astros' Alvarez won't participate in HR Derby

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez won’t participate in this year’s Home Run Derby despite leading the American League in round-trippers.

“I’m still open (to participating) but not this year,” Alvarez said Sunday, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.

The 28-year-old didn’t reveal if he’d been asked to take part in this year’s event, which had its format revamped by MLB.

Alvarez has never participated in the Home Run Derby but did receive an invite in 2022. He ultimately missed the event due to a hand injury sustained prior to the Midsummer Classic.

Alvarez, the top All-Star vote-getter among AL players at DH, is hitting .322/.428/.640 with 25 homers and 56 RBIs this season.
