Frasier premiered on NBC in 1993 as a spin-off of Cheers. The show followed Dr. Frasier Crane, a radio psychiatrist who returns to his native Seattle after his marriage ends.
He shares his apartment with his retired police officer father, Martin, and Martin’s physical therapist, Daphne Moon. His equally pompous brother, Niles, adds fuel to the sibling rivalry throughout the series.
In 2006, the British television network Channel 4 released the results of The Ultimate Sitcom. The poll asked working comedy professionals to name the greatest sitcom ever made.
Frasier claimed the top spot, beating out Fawlty Towers and Seinfeld. Porridge, The Larry Sanders Show and The Office also cracked the top 10. Only six of the 20 shows were American.

How Frasier Rewrote Emmy History in One Night
Frasier delivered its most historic night on September 13, 1998, at the 50th Primetime Emmy Awards. It was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
The NBC sitcom won Outstanding Comedy Series for a fifth consecutive year. No comedy had ever won that category five years running. The record stood alone until Modern Family matched it in 2014.
Kelsey Grammer added to the milestone that night. He won his third Emmy as lead actor in a comedy series for playing Dr. Frasier Crane.
David Hyde Pierce won his second Emmy as supporting actor for playing Niles. The victories highlighted another dominant night for Frasier at television’s most prestigious awards ceremony.
The show’s ensemble cast, including Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin, helped sustain the quality that fueled the streak.
The streak began in 1994 and ran uninterrupted through 1998. Over that stretch, Frasier edged out fellow nominees year after year. The streak included beating Seinfeld, which never captured the top comedy prize during Frasier’s reign.
Frasier concluded its 11-season run in 2004 with 37 Emmy wins. That total remains the most Emmys ever earned by a single comedy series.
The five-year streak still ranks among the most dominant runs in Emmy history, matched only once and never broken outright.
