John Carlson will not be playing next season with the defending Stanley Cup champions after all.
The veteran UFA defenseman agreed to a two-year, $17-million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
Carlson’s deal with Tampa Bay comes just days after the Carolina Hurricanes acquired his rights in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks for a sixth-round pick. Carolina had his exclusive rights to negotiate a deal until he became a free agent Wednesday.
The acquisition of Carlson could represent a pivot for Tampa Bay after star defenseman Zach Werenski announced that he would like to remain with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Lightning were rumored to be one of the reigning Norris Trophy winner’s preferred trade destinations.
Carlson split last season between the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks, registering 14 goals and 60 points across 71 games. He’s recorded at least 51 points in each of the last three seasons.
The 36-year-old spent the first 17 years of his career with the Washington Capitals before moving to the Ducks at last year’s trade deadline.
