Rolling Stone famously curated a comprehensive list of the “100 Best Sitcoms of All Time.”
Unsurprisingly, The Simpsons came out on top as the very best sitcom in history for being an “artifact of what that civilization was like on either side of the millennial divide.” That’s on top of the 37-season cartoon being just really funny.
The top of the list was populated by comedy classics. Cheers, Seinfeld, I Love Lucy and All in the Family rounded out the top five. The prevailing theme of the very best sitcoms was that none of them was released in this millennium. In fact, the only exception in the top 10 was Parks and Recration (No. 9), which debuted in 2009.
Being the relatively new player that it is, Netflix had very little representation on the list. As a matter of fact, only one Netflix original cracked the top 20. That honor belonged to the acclaimed animated tragicomedy BoJack Horseman.

Netflix’s BoJack Horseman Among ‘Best Sitcoms of All Time’
Rolling Stone ranked BoJack Horseman as the No. 20 best comedy show of all time. That’s quite an achievement for an animated series that lasted six seasons, spanning 77 episodes.
Released in 2014, BoJack follows the story of washed-up ’90s TV star who just so happens to be a talking horse. It’s a dark comedy that tackles depression and addiction, among other things, as BoJack attempts to mount an unlikely comeback on the small screen.
“Among the saddest shows on this list, but also one of the most likely to inspire the kind of old-fashioned spit-take BoJack had to perform back in the Nineties, when he was on a very famous TV show,” Rolling Stone wrote.
Will Arnett stars as the main character in the show, BoJack. He is supported by a powerhouse cast that includes Alison Brie, Aaron Paul and Amy Sedaris. Other big-name artists who lent their voice for the series include J.K. Simmons, Stanley Tucci, Lisa Kudrow and Patton Oswalt.
The series earned widespread critical acclaim during its six-year run. Most notably, BoJack won Best Animated Series at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards four times.
To say that BoJack was a smashing success for Netflix would be an understatement. As its first-ever adult animated series, the show established the streaming platform as a major force in prestige adult animation.
