The Nigerian Senate has passed a landmark Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to establish state police services across the federation, following a highly contentious plenary session marked by procedural adjustments and accelerated legislative consideration. The bill, which has been in development for nearly three years, scaled third reading after lawmakers suspended standard rules to allow for faster deliberation and adopted manual voting to avoid technical disruptions. All twenty-six clauses of the legislation were passed with overwhelming majority support, exceeding eighty votes per clause. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele explained that the decentralised policing structure is designed to clearly separate federal and state operational responsibilities while introducing safeguards against political misuse. News Central National Assembly Correspondent Sagir Ibrahim joins the conversation with his report.
