Report: USMNT, Pochettino close to contract renewal

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino is close to reaching an agreement on a new contract with the United States men’s national team, sources told Paul Tenorio, Tom Bogert, Henry Bushnell, and David Ornstein of The Athletic.

A deal to extend the Argentine boss’ reign has yet to be finalized, but there has reportedly been progress in negotiations to keep him under contract through the 2030 World Cup.

The USMNT had a promising start to its World Cup campaign on home soil this summer, but the team’s run ended with a disappointing 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16.

Pochettino took over as the U.S.’ coach in the fall of 2024. The team has experienced ups and downs under his watch, but it showed great signs during the 2026 World Cup group stage.

The USMNT opened its campaign with a 4-1 win over Paraguay, followed by a 2-0 triumph against Australia. Pochettino’s men suffered their first loss to Turkiye before the knockout stage. The team then beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 before a listless elimination defeat to Belgium in a game marked by Folarin Balogun‘s controversial red-card ban suspension.
