Report: Red Wings hire search firm to find new GM

Detroit Red Wings owner Christopher Ilitch hired a search firm to help the team find its next general manager, a source told Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

The Red Wings have been looking for a replacement for Steve Yzerman since he transitioned to a senior adviser role July 15. Detroit didn’t make any playoff appearances during Yzerman’s seven-year run as GM.

Ilitch reportedly wants to hire an analytics-driven general manager.

The Red Wings’ next GM will inherit a challenging situation with captain Dylan Larkin, who reportedly wants out. Larkin has a no-trade clause but would apparently waive it for the Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild, or Dallas Stars.

Assistant general manager Shawn Horcoff is in charge of day-to-day responsibilities for the Red Wings, but his role doesn’t include making trades, according to St. James.

Detroit reports to training camp Sept. 17.
