Report: Yankees to promote top prospect Lombard

The New York Yankees are promoting their No. 1 prospect, infielder George Lombard Jr., to the major leagues, according to Jack Curry of YES Network.

The 21-year-old will replace shortstop Anthony Volpe, whom the Yankees optioned back to Triple-A after Monday’s 13-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. New York also demoted pitcher Angel Chivilli and outfielder Jasson Domínguez, the latter of whom will give way to trade acquisition Heliot Ramos.

Lombard will head to New York after flying through the Yankees’ minor-league system and establishing himself as the clear-cut top prospect in the organization. He posted a .971 OPS in Double-A this season before registering an .845 OPS in Triple-A.

Lombard, who’s primarily played shortstop in the minors, is the No. 20 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The Yankees drafted him out of high school in the first round in 2023.

Meanwhile, Volpe heads back to the minors after another unsuccessful stint with the big club. Once a top prospect himself, Volpe has struggled both offensively and defensively for much of his career.

The Yankees have been looking for a franchise shortstop ever since Derek Jeter retired in 2014.
