World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open to recover from a right knee issue, he announced Friday on social media.
The five-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t played since defeating Alexander Zverev at the Wimbledon final in July. He previously pulled out of the National Bank Open and the Cincinnati Open.

Sinner has made the semifinals or better in seven of his past eight major appearances.
The Italian owns a 23-6 career record at the US Open, including a title in 2024. He fell to rival Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s championship match in Flushing Meadows.
Alcaraz announced Thursday that he’d be competing at the American Slam after missing several months with a wrist injury.
Sinner was having an outstanding 2026 campaign prior to being sidelined, going 44-3 and winning six titles. The 25-year-old became the first player to complete the Sunshine Double without dropping a set. He then swept the Masters 1000 clay-court tournaments, winning in Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.
Sinner’s only defeats this year were to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, Jakub Mensik at the Qatar Open, and Juan Manuel Cerundolo at the French Open.
