Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay isn’t putting a timeline on former All-Pro Aaron Donald‘s potential comeback.
“I’m hopeful that it will be sooner than later, but I also want to respect when he does feel like that clarity will come,” McVay told reporters Saturday after the Rams’ preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs, including the Los Angeles Times’ Gary Klein. “I think there’s a chance that we’ll be closer to that than not. But again, I don’t want to say too much or put some sort of invisible deadline on something that doesn’t exist in my mind for him.”
The 35-year-old Donald, who retired after the 2023 season, is mulling a return to the NFL. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year could bolster a Rams defense that will be anchored by All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.
McVay shared that he’s had “great dialogue” with Donald, who has stayed in peak shape by working out at the Rams’ facilities while he considers a reunion.
NFL clubs are required to cut their rosters from 90 players to 53 on Aug. 30.
McVay says he wants to respect Donald’s decision-making process and that the eight-time first-team All-Pro has “earned that right to have clarity” about whether to resume his career.
McVay also indicated that he’s pleased with Los Angeles’ roster regardless of Donald’s status.
“I feel great about our football team as it currently stands, and I know he’ll add value if he decides to come,” McVay said.
